Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA)
Country:
South Africa
Description:
The Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA) is one of the leading environmental organisations in South Africa. Established in 1926, it is the oldest and largest non-governmental environmental organisation in the country. It is interesting to note that the Society developed in response to wildlife hunters concerned about diminishing stocks of game and wildlife!

Today, WESSA has moved away from protection of wildlife only into a more holistic approach to environmental issues.

WESSA has been a motivating force behind many of South Africa’s most significant environmental actions.
The Society is a membership-based organisation. It provides opportunities for its members and supporters to become involved in environmental issues. Activities for WESSA members take place across the country, and there are numerous projects for hands-on environmental action.
