View Tracy Worcester's documentary on BBC World for 5 days from Fri August 19th, 2005

Tracy Worcester's documentary “Gross National Happiness" shows how the Royal Government of Bhutan is tying to curb rural to urban migration. Most governments across the world see their destitute farmers as cheap labour that give their industries the competitive edge in the global economy. However, Bhutan has reversed their school curriculum’s urban bias to produce ‘educated farmers. To revitalize the local economy they give grants to increase and diversify crop production and boost traditional crafts. They have devolved power to local councils and are researching Gross Domestic Happiness as a more inclusive measurement of progress than GDP. However, with many government ministers graduating in economics from American Universities, they are increasingly becoming drawn into the global economy. Despite cries from farmers to be protected from cheap imported food in their markets, the politicians are considering joining the World Trade Organization. The body that will lock them into binding trade liberalization rules. Bhutan is at a cross roads. Either it signs up to the WTO rules that will give foreign Multinationals and investors total rights over their trade, resources and services or it forges a new development pattern that protects small producers and the environment against the vagaries of the global economy.

NEW PHARMCROPS WEBSITE
Posted 6 July 2004

If you visit the PharmCrops web site now you can preview the new PharmCrops logo:
www.pharmcrops.com
As you are probably aware, the term "PharmCrops" refers to plants that have been genetically engineered to contain pharmaceutical drugs. We expect the PharmCrops web site to be quite popular since this issue has generated a lot of attention recently from the media, the grocery industry and environmental activists. In March, the California Rice Commission granted Ventria Bioscience permission to grow 120 acres of commercial rice in California that contains genetically engineered pharmaceutical drugs. However, a couple weeks later, permission to grow this controversial rice was turned down by both the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the California Department of Food and Agriculture. The PharmCrops web site will serve as an educational resource center and provide activist tools to oppose the USDA's plan to allow the commercial growing of these risky and controversial crops

We are very pleased to tell you that we are re-publishing Cormac Cullinanís ëWild Lawí with Green Books.

It will be available shortly and we are pleased to offer it to you at the published price of 9.95 pounds (but this includes postage and packing). Please send your orders direct to us and make cheques payable to ëThe Gaia Foundationí. We do hope you will take advantage of this opportunity to enjoy this timely and provocative book.

'WILD LAW - A Manifesto for Earth Justice'
By Cormac Cullinan
with a Foreword by Thomas Berry

ìThis book of Cormac Cullinan explains with great clarity how we can change our entire approach to governance so that we can continue life on a liveable planet.î óThomas Berry, author of ëThe Dream of the Earthí, ëThe Universe Storyí and ëThe Great Workí

ìThe survival of our species and health of the Earth family depends on our ability to transform governance systems so that humans become part of the ecological matrix of biological and cultural diversity. This book is a milestone on that path.î
óDr Vandana Shiva, author of ëStaying Aliveí and ëWater Warsí.

We are rapidly destroying our only habitat, Earth. It is becoming clear that many of the treaties, laws and policies concluded in recent years have failed to slow down, let alone halt or reverse, this process. Cormac Cullinan shows that the survival of the community of life on Earth (including humans) requires us to alter fundamentally our understanding of the nature and purpose of law and governance, rather than merely changing laws. In describing what this new ëEarth governanceí and ëEarth jurisprudenceí might look like, he also gives practical guidance on how to begin moving towards it.

'Wild Law' fuses politics, legal theory and ancient wisdom into a fascinating and eminently readable story. It is an inspiring and stimulating book for anyone who cares about Earth and is concerned about the direction in which the human species is moving.

Cormac Cullinan is chief executive officer of EnAct International, an environmental law and policy consultancy headquartered in Cape Town, South Africa and a partner in the specialist environmental law firm Winstanley, Smith and Cullinan Inc. A former shipping and international commercial lawyer, he has specialised in the field of environmental law and policy since 1992.

Free monthly news & analysis bulletin from the Campaign For a GE-Free Brazil
Posted 3 July 2003
Dear friends,
This is the first issue of the international monthly news & analysis bulletin to be edited in English by AS-PTA Assessment and Services to Projects on Agro-ecology, member of the Campaign "For a GM-Free Brazil", which is run by a collective of Brazil's non governmental organizations (NGOs) and social movements. Every 30 days we will keep you informed of the most updated developments to impede the commercialization of GMOs in this country, a fight that started back in 1988 and that has up to now blocked the spread of the frank commerce in this nation. This bulletin will be distributed in English free of charge to every citizen or organization interested in hearing the experience of BrazilÇs civil society on impeding large corporations from making Brazil a field for the cultivation of their seeds of death. As you possibly know, Brazil is the last producer-exporter of grains that has not capitulated to GE. This led the nation to a key position in the geo-political chess of GMOs. If Brazil falls, then world's largest grain consumers Europe and China will have no other choice than to import transgenic products from GMO producer countries since there is no other large world producer capable of supplying these big consumers. This bulletin will circulate in the form of a moderated email list I am the moderator, by the way. Please, fell free to indicate other individuals or organizations you believe would be interested in getting in contact with us. Also, tell as us if you are not to be interest in receiving the upcoming issues of BRAZIL GMO FREE UPDATE - An international monthly news&analysis bulletin on the developments of the fight against GMOs in Brazil. Published by Assessoria e ServiÁos a Projetos em Agricultura Alternativa (AS-PTA). The Campaign For a GM-Free Brazil is a collective of Brazilian NGOs (such as ActionAid Brazil, Esplar, Fase, Greenpeace Brazil, Ibase, Idec) and social movements such as Contag, MST and Via Campesina.

The Importance of Redistributing Income to Reduce Poverty in Latin America: A study carried out on poverty reduction in Latin America and the Caribbean finds that inequality reduction or redistribution of income is a more important factor in reducing poverty in the region than mere income growth. The report Meeting the Millennium Poverty Reduction Targets in Latin America and the Caribbean based on a study carried out by ECLAC and the UN Development Programme and Brazil's Institute for Applied Economic Research (IPEA), provides 'grounds for both concern and optimism.' Recognising the legal rights of other species
Posted 01 May 2003
If humans do not recognise the rights of other organisms to freely occupy large parts of Earth's surface then our civilizations face imminent collapse. The 17th century reductionist dogma is wrong. Humans are not superior or removed from nature. We are a part of an interconnected whole. We rely on other life forms for every aspect of our lives from a resource base to the vital ecosystem services that they provide. It is ethically right to recognise the legal rights of other species. It is also required if humans will survive the next century. Sign On !!!

Looking for funding for a new film documentary entitled Once Upon a River..., India
Posted 15 April 2003
Strange things are happening to Indian waters. On one hand, newspaper articles tell you that there will be no water to drink in the next 25 years, on the other bottling plants selling ëpureí water are springing up almost on a daily basis. Indian restaurants no longer serve glasses of water as soon as their customer is seated ñ going against all norms of Indian tradition, customers are now expected to order and pay for their water during the course of a meal. Apart from nursery rhymes, not many children in India today will equate rivers with fresh water. The water that children drink depends largely on their parentsí finances. Water in this country has become a very dear commodity. Once Upon a River... flows through all the quirks and vagaries that form Indiaís water scenario. A watery quilt held together by individuals who refuse to let it all fall apart. ClichÈs apart, they really are our unsung heroes. Their stories are told by the filmmakers and in their own voices as each of these people meet another of their ilk through the filmís journey along Indiaís rivers. The film is currently under production and is open to funding. The filmmakers are looking at full or part funding of the film. For more details about the film and the filmmakers, contact mail@elephantcorridor.org

Request for information on why it is economically unsound to commercialise genetically modified products

The new Brazilian government says that, according to Brazilian Legislation, GMOs cannot be released. However, the agribusiness sector is trying to get approval through other ways. They have already submitted a Proposal in the Brazilian Congress to change the Law and get approval for GMO soybean. We have to continue pressuring the government to enforce the Law, otherwise we can lose this battle. The agribusiness sector says that Brazil will lose market if GMO soybean is not allowed. We are trying to show that it is not true. Please help by sending us information on market & economic issues such as: Updated information on retailer or traders committed to supplying none-GMO food; updated information on market for no GMO food in Europe, etc.; consumers reaction to GMOs in Europe (Has this changed?) etc.
