Welcome to the Media Support pages

If youíre new to it, dealing with the media can be intimidating and confusing. This part of the site helps you publicise your activities around the Earth Summit. It gives you some tips on how to handle the media - find out what makes a good news story, how to write a press release, how to give a good interview and how to approach journalists.

Setting Your Goals

Before you embark on a publicity campaign, you need to have a clear sense of what you are trying to achieve and why:

Step 1: Develop a clear statement of your organisation's mission and a set of short-term goals to make sure you can focus your energy and resources toward achieving that mission.

Step 2: Consider the following questions with colleagues:

What are we trying to accomplish that we want others to know about?
Why do we want them to know about it (eg fundraising, action impact)
What is our immediate target audience (eg government, industry)?
Who are we ultimately trying to reach (eg policymakers, public or funders)?
What do we want to say to them? (ie campaign message, policy change)
What are the best ways of getting across our message? (eg media strategies).

You need to come up with concrete answers to these questions before you do anything!
